Growing up in carnivorous South Africa, the number of vegetarians I knew could be counted on one of my pinkies. The lady in question found the sight of raw meat rather repulsive and she didn't particularly enjoy the taste of it cooked.
Not so me. I found her perspective rather intriguing but loved the savory delights of meat far too much to even consider eliminating it from my diet. Lamb, beef, chicken, bacon - far too delicious to avoid and surely not even healthy to do so?
Fast forward a number of years and a couple of continents later, add a wedding ring and a couple of changes of social networks, and suddenly I found myself surrounded by one, two, three, four, five, six (and counting) hearty and healthy vegetarians. I of course knew better, but my husband persisted in asking these people WHY they chose a vegetarian lifestyle? Health? Earth care? Inhumane treatment of animals? Propoganda, I told him. Don't listen to their lies.... They'll sucker you into thinking it's a better choice, and there's no WAY I'm giving up my lamb dinners, or for that matter, cooking something different for you every night!
Alas, alack, soon he was convinced, and seeing how my husband is quite the persuader (not to mention those videos on the PETA website), we decided to forgo meat and for our little family of two to adopt a quasi-vegetarian lifestyle.
And so, after a year of figuring out how to plan a meal sans chicken breast, and occasionally foraying into seafood, and under certain conditions, yes meat, this blog is born.
I'm still figuring things out. My recipe repertoire needs to expand considerably, there is a whole world of beans to be discovered, and indeed, should we throw caution to the wind and go the whole hog (ahem, I mean, bok choy) and go vegan?
Hopefully here is where we'll find out. Won't you join me on the journey?
